Global Commission partners with French and Swiss organizations to raise awareness on the war on drugs and the Hepatitis C viral time bomb.
In late October, French organizations working on health and drug policy – Médecins du Monde, ASUD, the GREA, the Fédération addiction, the AFR and SOS Hépatites – supported commissioner Ruth Dreifuss, former president of Switzerland, and commissioner Michel Kazatchkine, UNSG’s Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, for the launch of the French version of the GCDP report: L’impact négatif de « la guerre contre la drogue » sur la santé publique. L’épidémie cachée d’hépatite C. (The negative impacts of the War on Drugs on public Health: The Hidden Hepatitis C Epidemic).
The report presented in Paris illustrates how repressive drug policies fuel the Hepatitis C epidemic among people who use drugs and their partners. The Global Commission on Drug Policy reinforced the demand for ending the criminalization and incarceration of non-violent drug users and the extension of harm reduction programs to prevent the spread of Hepatitis C and other diseases. The international version of the document was presented in Geneva in June 2013.
